George Elgar Hicks
English painter of the Victorian era. Considered the main imitator William Powell Frith. Born March 13, 1824 in Lymington, Hampshire. George Elgar Hicks was the second son of a wealthy judge. Hicks parents wanted him to become a doctor, and Hicks studied medicine at University College from 1840-42. However, after three years of study Hicks decided he wanted to be an artist. In 1844 he entered the Royal Academy Schools. He retired in 1890 and died a month before the declaration of the First World War in 1914.
